So it’s been a while since anyone anywhere has said anything on this space. The main website has started to stagnate: the store locator seems to be broken, and the photo viewer needs updating badly. It would appear we’ve fallen off the face of the earth. What could possibly have distracted us so badly?

Well, we’re married now! I’m already back in Seattle and Rebecca is wrapping up her first week in med school—in case you haven’t heard, it’s the prestigious Baylor College of Medicine! I’m almost back in the swing of things (currently I’m a bit ill), but have quite a few photos in store for our readers (all two of them).

I’m still editing our honeymoon photos, the rehearsal dinner photos are in the middle of quite a long upload, but the good news is all of our wedding photos—well all the ones we liked—are now online.

The best place to get started is the Our Wedding collection, which contains 15 not-necessarily-disjoint sets dividing the big event into handy semantic categories. The tagging of individuals in the (around 2,000) photos isn’t quite complete, so the ever-fun “show me photos of him and her but without that guy” searches are—for the time being—sadly impossible. You can, however, download the full resolution version of any photo: just hit “All Sizes” and download the original. Enjoy!

About two weeks ago, I gave some info to the Temple Daily Telegram regarding announcing our engagement. The online form said they would contact us prior to publishing. We hadn’t heard anything, so we figured it wouldn’t come out that week. On Sunday, February 15th, I woke up to phone calls letting me know that it was in the paper!!

I didn’t have this realization until a week after the announcement came out, but the announcement coincided with the exact six year anniversary of our first date – our bike ride and picnic at Lions Park on February 15, 2003! I didn’t look at the calendar when I submitted the form to the Temple Daily Telegram. How did they know??? I didn’t even realize it when it first came out, but I’ll take it as a good sign

On an upnote, I finally figured out how to upload videos to YouTube (these kids and their newfangled technologies). I’ll probably be throwing some stuff up that might be interesting to readers. If I ever get around to it, a Thanksgiving post with pictures and video from the A&M game might be cool, as will video of whatever Rebecca and I decide to do for New Year’s (she’ll be in Seattle!). We might also post wedding videos or whatever else cool we find.

For now, enjoy the wonderful Leatherman Charge, the gift Rebecca got me for my birthday (November 5th for all you who don’t celebrate this Christmas-in-November). It came in handy trying to open some stupid lightbulb packaging.

Recently a friend gave me an extra copy of Left 4 Dead he had ordered so that I could play alongside him online. Because games don’t run so hot in VMWare, I repartitioned my hard drive to allow Boot Camp to do its thing. The dual-boot seems to work and I get to gaming. So far so good.

Co-op zombie apocalypse fun for ages 17 and up!

But signs had already started appearing that not all was well: during the Boot Camp process, I noticed my filesystem had some issues that I (wrongly) believed were fixable. I ran a repair utility and kept on gaming, forgetting anything was ever wrong.

The next day before work, I rebooted into OS X so I could load the latest episode of our president-elect’s weekly radio podcast onto my iPhone. Strangely, iTunes claimed my install was corrupted. Yeah, whatever. I download the latest iTunes .dmg and mount it, even letting the checksum complete (yeah, I’m usually impatient and skip this part). The installer does its thing for a while before erroring out with a message telling me the install media is damaged. Um, no. No it’s not. Now I know something’s up.

So I pass on my weekly episode of Obamarama and head off to work, shutting down my computer to save power. I get home late (after nine) and boot up the old girl so read my news and mail. No chime (this has been broken for a while), then grey screen, then Apple logo, then spinner, then…

I hear all my drives spin down and the machine die. What? This isn’t supposed to happen. I try to reboot into Windows XP. Well, that works. I try OS X again: no luck.

I’ve got good backups in place so I won’t be losing any crucial data, but all my website development tools are in OS X and I’m not about to start working in Windows XP. So the planned site update for this weekend isn’t going to happen. Instead, I’ll be increasing the frequency I post to the blog, so stay tuned.

A Pike Place Vendor

While shopping at the grocery store today, I was reminded of a line from Persepolis in which the recently emigrated protagonist sees her frequency of visits to the grocer as indicative of a need to go out and meet people. Well, perhaps I should find a few more friends in my new city, but I can’t help it: I really like going grocery shopping.

Without a regional giant such as H-E-B, Seattle seems to be able to harbor a larger variety of grocers, each catering to a specific socioeconomic stratum, ethics system, or cuisine affinity. And though capitalism usually leads to a consolidation of wealth that contributes nothing to personal happiness and unity, in this instance–against all odds–something has turned out right. My hypothesis is that a reduced reliance on automobiles has produced an environment in which any company can swoop in and grab a bunch of customers on the sole basis that these customers will have to walk/bike/bus for less time than before.

The results are encouraging. Metropolitan Market, QFC, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Safeway, Uwajimaya, and others too numerous to name are all within minutes by bus (or foot!). My personal favorite is currently Metropolitan Market, a slightly upscale, Western, stocks-organic-but-not-afraid-to-sell-mainstream-brands, intimate shop with a great produce and deli selection.

I’m not quite sure what it is I like so much about a good grocery store. I think it is some combination of my loves for good cooking, good design, and picturesque places that draws me in. Typical American consumerism is as a matter of fact revolting, but the abundance on display at a good grocer makes me proud of my country. The colors and textures present in the produce section, the methodical, repeated rhythm of the logos in the soups and sauces aisle, and the hustle-and-bustle of the butchers and bakers imbue the surroundings with a sense of life unmatched anywhere except the open street markets–people are here to buy that they may go on living.

Choice can be paralyzing, but in this one instance, I’m happy to stand in front of a wall of jams trying to decide exactly which grape jelly I want this month.

While researching to help me define the typographic style of our main webpage, I came across a section in a book which seemed relevant to weddings.

3.4.1 To the marriage of type and text, both parties bring their cultural presumptions, dreams and family obligations. Accept them.

Each text, each manuscript (and naturally, each language and each alphabet) has its own requirements and expectations. Some types are more adaptable than others in meeting these demands. But typefaces too have their individual habits and presumptions.
